Happy Holidays from BPI group!

It's a time to look back... and a time to look forward.

In this season of giving, we often reflect on those who have given us their time and friendship over the past year.  We thank you - our valued clients and friends - for your continued support.  In turn, we are pleased to announce that we are giving back to the community by establishing a unique initiative - "Giving Back" - through which we have committed to the reemployment of 100 women in 2011. Working in partnership with JVS Chicago, a non-profit, non-sectarian social service agency, we will provide personalized coaching and career transition services free of charge until each candidate is successfully placed. The Giving Back program underscores BPI group's global commitment to help the communities we serve. It's only fitting that we introduce the initiative during this season of reflection.

At the same time, like so many of you, we are also looking ahead to the New Year by making personal resolutions for ourselves and by strategic planning for our businesses. This requires anticipating what lies ahead and making calculated bets on where to invest in order to create growth and sustainability. While we will leave predictions about what lies ahead in the economy to others, we do know that the "same-old, same-old" will no longer work. Read more in this issue on new trends in career transition and outplacement, tips on hiring employees who will fit your culture and an article on how to make learning sustainable

Best wishes,

Juan Luis Goujon, President & CEO BPI group U.S., on behalf of the entire BPI group team

NewNormalThe "New Normal" Requires a New Approach to Career Transition

Career TransitionWhen outplacement was first introduced fifty plus years ago, it's doubtful that its inventors could have possibly foreseen the state of work today. Back then, after the Second World War, employment was considered a life-long contract between employee and employer. Retirement parties and a gold watch were the culmination of 25, 30 or even 50 years of work with the same company.

It's exceedingly evident that times have changed. The world of work has changed very dramatically. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average person born in the later years of the baby boom held 10.8 jobs from age 18 to 42 alone.

That's why, at BPI group, we have re-invented and enhanced our career transition programs to ensure that they meet the needs of both employers and employees in today's "new normal" where it is common to change jobs (or even industries) every few years. Given that, our contemporary programs combine the two most valued components of career transition support: customized job leads and personalized, private meetings with a career consultant. In addition, individuals are offered tools and training for successful "onboarding" into their new positionsClick here to keep reading about our innovative career transition solutions, and how we're focusing on the "placement" in outplacement.

HiringHiring for "Fit":
Understanding the What and the How

Ask a hiring manager what they want and you will typically hear: "I want the best, most talented candidate for the job."  The answer is seemingly simple, but what does it really mean?  How can you ensure that the candidate picked is indeed "the best"?

Hiring the best candidate means evaluating talent, skills, knowledge, experience, and, of course, prior performance. But, it is not only about that.  It is also about behaviors, communications, energy, pace, vision, attention to detail, orientation to change and many, many other factors.  So, how do you get the best, most talented candidate that also fits the role and the culture? Click here to keep reading.
Healthcare Human Capital Challenges

The healthcare industry faces many of the same people challenges as other industries:

- Ensuring that organizations have the right talent - and enoughHealthcare Providers of that talent - with both technical skills and leadership skills.

- Dealing with resource constraints that limit the ability to engage, coach, develop, train and retain key talent (whether physicians, nurses or staff) and carry out thoughtful succession planning in the light of talent shortages and as boomers retire.

What is particularly unique to healthcare, however, is that these issues must be dealt with in the context of many known - and, as of yet, unknown - overarching changes resulting from healthcare reform.  Ultimately, organizational structures, roles and work processes may need to undergo radical changes in order to positively support on-going business strategy.

Since 1997, our senior consultants have helped hundreds of healthcare organizations and executives come to grips with the issues facing the industry and the profession.

RepositionRe-Positioning for Growth:
Three Ways to Make Learning "Stick"

Repositioning for GrowthA recent survey of executives by the American Management Association found that many specific worker skills and competencies need considerable improvement in order for companies to succeed in a fast-paced global economy.

It's clear that part of re-positioning demands that we re-think the way in which training is developed and delivered to ensure that it "sticks".  In other words, we need to re-think training to ensure that the learning is sustainable long after the program is over.

So how do you ensure that training is indeed "sticky"? Click here to read three recommendations offered by BPI group's Learning Solutions team.
