Friends,
By now, we are well into 2011 and, for many of us, our best-intentioned New Year's resolutions are simmering on the back burner while we put out the most immediate, day-to-day fires. A Spanish proverb, "Tomorrow is often the busiest day of the week," makes light of this universal tendency to postpone. Apparently, regardless of our backgrounds, scientists are discovering that humans are hard-wired for procrastination - even when the consequences are negative!
Looking ahead to the next few months, however, there are several key intertwined people issues that no organization can afford to ignore:
The experience drain: with the aging of the workforce, companies must focus on the experience pool needed for future growth. In fact, a recent survey by AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) and SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management) found that one in five corporate respondents believe that the potential loss of talent over the next decade will be problematic for their organizations, while 45% think it will be a potential problem. That is reason enough to start serious and disciplined workforce planning now and to design accompanying processes that support recruitment and succession planning.
The ineffective organization: post-recession, businesses need to act quickly to realign their organizational design to fully support their business strategy. In the aftermath of workforce reductions and restructuring, many businesses now must reassess whether their existing organizational structure enables employees to complete critical activities efficiently and effectively. To use an analogy borrowed from Goldilocks, the organizational structure needs to be "just right." If not, companies need to re-evaluate what structures, roles, processes and systems will best drive them towards meeting strategic objectives. Read more here.
The development deficiency: after having put learning programs on hold during the last few years, many organizations now find they need to accelerate training and development across the board to catch up. Skills training is, of course, critical but leadership development is equally important. A holistic approach requires looking, first and foremost, at the needs of the entire organization; inventorying existing skills and then complementing them through the whole array of developmental programs, from on-the-job training to executive coaching.
Procrastination may be innate to human nature. But time is of the essence when addressing these critical people issues. Your organization's future may depend on moving ahead now.
Thanks for your continued support,
Juan-Luis Goujon, President & CEO BPI group, North America, on behalf of the entire BPI group team

Executive Coaching:
The Insiders' View of the Value of Coaching
Organizations are increasingly turning to executive coaching to enhance the performance of their current leaders - and their future, high-potential leaders. In fact, a recent survey shows that more than half of all human resources and other corporate executives expect executive coaching to grow in 2011.
What is driving this? And what do executives who have either experienced coaching first hand or are advocates for executive coaching really think about how, why and when coaching is most effective? We recently spoke to several senior level executives, including CEOs, CIOs and CHROs, about the topic. Their insights follow in a two-part Q&A article which will continue in our next issue. Giving Back:
An update on our 2011 mission to help 100 women find jobs
In December 2010, we announced the establishment of an exciting initiative for 2011: Giving Back, a program to help 100 unemployed women in the Chicago area get back to work.
Working in partnership with JVS Chicago, a non-profit, non-sectarian social service agency, we are providing personalized coaching and career transition services free of charge until each candidate is successfully placed.
We are excited to be able to share some positive results from the program, which launched on January 20, 2011:
- 100 Chicago-area women have been selected for the program.
- 36 women have already started their programs with BPI group coaches.
- Most importantly, 5 of the 36 women are already back to work!
Click below to watch an interview with Mike Buckman, Managing Director, Executive Advisory Services, who explains his role as a mentor in the Giving Back program, in a conversation with one of our first Giving Back candidates, Jacqueline Kohn.

The Business Case for Using a Search Firm: Five Winning Arguments
In a trial, a judge asks the ultimate question, "How does the jury find the defendant?" In the business world, when making a case for a new project, process or initiative, the ultimate question is "Does the benefit justify the cost?" When it comes to outsourcing a job search to a professional, as far as we are concerned, the case is pretty cut and dried. In fact, we think the case - the business case - for using a search firm is stronger than ever. The benefits do justify the cost.
That may leave some of our readers questioning our judgment. In today's environment - characterized by historically high unemployment rates - it would seem that great candidates are plentiful and that hiring a search firm is an unnecessary expense. However, while there are certainly exceptions, we believe that most companies can make a winning business case for hiring external search consultants...even in today's talent market. Click here to read our five winning arguments for why this makes good business sense. |
